Smelting process of gold mud
The raw materials for smelting in CIL plant are provided by the desorption electrodeposition process, which includes two parts: electric MPF mud and Gold carrying steel wool. The main components of the electric MPF mud are gold and silver, which contain about 30~45% gold and 20~30% silver. The others are mostly quartz sand and fine carbon mud, and a very small amount of base metals, such as Pb、Cu、Fe、 Al2O3、Zn、 Mn, etc base metal. In terms of metal content, it accounts for 10 ~ 20% of the total gold produced by the CIL plant, and its gold grade is generally 10 ~ 20% and silver is about 10 ~ 15%. The impurity is mainly iron.

The process of separating gold and silver-smelting ingot is used in the treatment of electric MPF mud and gold-steel wool in CIL plant.
Silver and other base metals can react with nitric acid to produce soluble nitrate into the solution, while gold does not react with nitric acid and is deposited in solid state at the bottom of the reaction vessel.Using this chemical property of gold and silver and other base metals, the gold and silver can be easily separated and the impurities of base metals can be removed from the gold mud.The main reaction equations are as follows:

Ag+2HNO3(concentrated)=AgNO3+NO2+H2O

3Ag+4HNO3(dilute)=3AgNO3+NO+2H2O

Cu+4HNO3(concentrated)=Cu(NO3)2+2 NO2+2H2O

3Cu+8HNO3(dilute)=3Cu(NO3)2+2 NO+2H2O

4Fe+10HNO3(dilute)=4Fe(NO3)2+NH4NO3+3H2O

It can be seen from the above reaction formula that the reaction products are different with the addition of nitric acid. Therefore, in different stages of the reaction, controlling the concentration of nitric acid can save the amount of nitric acid and make the reaction complete.
